DOLPHINS MONITORING IN GREECE

WHEN: 7 days (6 nights) starting from the 1st of June 2025.

WHERE: in the Natura 2000 Protected Area "Gulf of Corinth". Activities will take place at sea and at our land base in Ktena Milokopi (Loutraki province). Accommodation at the eco-farm “Lakazeza” in bungalows for 2-4 people (www.lakazeza.com).

WHO: for those interested in discovering cetaceans in their natural environment. A background in marine biology is not required. There are no age limits. The only prerequisite is enthusiasm!

ACTIVITIES: Cetacean monitoring and data collection at sea (tender boat) and land-based surveys, lessons about cetacean biology and ethology, learning techniques and methods for cetacean monitoring and research, snorkeling and exploration of the marine environment, beach litter monitoring and citizen science activities.

IN COOPERATION WITH: Thalassa Training and Research; Eco-Farm Lakazeza.

PARTICIPATION FEE:The participation fee includes: membership to Gaia Research Institute, accommodation and meals, participation in research and monitoring activities (expert researchers, use of equipment and boat), round-trip transfer from Corinth Station to Milokopi.

Stage and internship for University Student: BEHAVIOUR AND ECOLOGY OF CETACEANS IN THE PROTECTED AREA "GULF OF CORINTH"

WHO: 1-3 months or more, starting from the 1st of April 2025.

WHERE: in the Natura 2000 Area "Gulf of Corinth". Accommodation at the eco-farm “Lakazeza” in bungalows for 2-4 people (www.lakazeza.com).

WHO: for students willing to study cetaceans in their natural environment and to improve their knowledge on cetaceans behaviour, ecology, and acoustic.

ACTIVITIES: cetacean monitoring and data collection at sea and from the land; data management; data analysis: behavioural analysis, spatial analysis, photo-identification analysis. Weekly participation in lectures on biology/ethology/ecology. During their free time, the participants can perform free activities like snorkelling. They can also visit the archaeological sites of the area. University students can develop their own thesis (minimum 3 months of data collection) in cooperation with Gaia’s researchers.

IN COOPERATION WITH: Thalassa Training and Research; Eco-Farm Lakazeza.

PARTICIPATION FEE: 980€/month. For a 3 months period, the fee would be 850€/month. Included: tutoring, training, research equipment, boat employment (sailing/engine boat, skipper, fuel), accommodation, meals. Not included: travel costs, activities during free time.

Workshop: PASSIVE ACOUSTIC MONITORING OF CETACEANS

WHEN: 7 days (6 nights), to be determined.

WHERE: in the Natura 2000 Area "Gulf of Corinth". In our base at Ktena Milokopi. Accommodation at the eco-farm “Lakazeza”, in bungalows for 2-4 people (www.lakazeza.com).

WHO: for those who want to deepen their knowledge on acoustic communication of cetaceans.

TRAINING: 24 hours of lectures, 20 hours of practical activity (data collection and data analysis), 10 hours of group work. Topics covered by the workshop: acoustic communication; the acoustics of the marine environment: measurement, description, and propagation of sound; marine mammals: hearing and production of sounds; acoustic characteristics of the sounds produced by marine mammals; passive acoustic monitoring of the presence of cetaceans; environmental and anthropogenic noise; audiograms of cetaceans and cetaceans sensitivity; passive acoustic for the study of the distribution, ecology and habitat use; acoustic data analysis; acoustic identification of cetacean species, and geographical variability; the passive acoustic for population studies: its application to the monitoring of sperm whales in the Mediterranean; the passive acoustic, and individual recognition: the “signature whistles” in bottlenose dolphins.

Workshop CONSERVATION OF MARINE MAMMALS: TECHNIQUES FOR THE STUDY OF CETACEANS’ POPULATION

WHEN: 7 days (6 nights), to be determined.

WHERE: Area Natura 2000 "Gulf of Corinth". In our base at Ktena Milokopi. Accommodation at the eco-farm “Lakazeza”, in bungalows for 2-4 people (www.lakazeza.com). WHO: for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the techniques employed for cetaceans population studies.

TRAINING: 16 hours of lectures, 24 hours of practical work (data collection and data processing), 10 hours of group work. Topics covered by the workshop: the cetaceans of the Mediterranean Sea; cetaceans conservation; the techniques employed in population studies (Distance Sampling and Mark-Release Recapture); photo identification; case studies; tutorials on data of photo identification; passive acoustic for a population study. Elaboration of a report with the collected data. Critical analysis of a publication and its presentation.

Workshop WILDLIFE DISTRIBUTION AND MODELLING

WHEN: to be determined.

WHERE: Torino (Italy).

WHO: for those who want to deepen their knowledge on the study of the distribution and spatial modelling of species.

TRAINING: 24 hours of lecture and 20 hours of data analysis. Topics covered by the workshop: GIS (DIVAGis and QGis) software, theory and practice; the use of R in ecological studies; the patterns of spatial distribution; the approach of maximum entropy (MAXENT), theory and practice.

Summer school BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION: PROTECTED SPECIES AND PROTECTED HABITAT

WHEN: 7 days (6 nights), to be determined.

WHERE: in front of the Natura 2000 Area "Gulf of Corinth", at the base of the Natura 2000 Area "Gerania Mountain", in our base at Ktena Milokopi. Accommodation at the eco-farm “Lakazeza”, in bungalows for 2-4 people (www.lakazeza.com).

WHO: particularly suitable for university students, but is open to everyone interested in marine and terrestrial biodiversity and its conservation. You don't need a background in biology or natural sciences.

ACTIVITIES: Trekking and exploration of the natural environment, among woods and olive groves; discovery of the marine and coastal environment; guided snorkelling in the Protected Area “Gulf of Corinth”; sea kayaking; dolphins monitoring; excursion at the protected area "Mount Gerania".

IN COOPERATION WITH: Thalassa Training and Research; Eco-Farm Lakazeza.

Youth camp SPORT AND DISCOVERY OF THE ENVIRONMENT

WHEN: 7 days (6 nights), to be determined.

WHERE: in the Natura 2000 Area "Gulf of Corinth", in our base at Micri Milokopi. Accommodation in rooms for 2-4 people at the eco-farm “Lakazeza” (www.lakazeza.com).

WHO: activities for the young members of the Gaia Research Institute Onlus, children and teenagers from 5 to 13 years of age, alone or accompanied by their parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles.

ACTIVITIES: trekking in the woods following the animal’s tracks, the discovery of coastal waters and fishes, dolphin monitoring, sea kayaking, and...lots of fun!

IN COOPERATION WITH: Thalassa Training and Research; Eco-Farm Lakazeza.

YOUTH CAMP FEE: 650€ for children/teenagers, 560€ for parents and relatives accompanying children and teenagers. Discounts for families/groups. Included in the fee: participation in all leaded activities (camp crew, equipment); accommodation and meals. Not included: all travel costs; activities of accompanying adults. N° of participants: min. 3 - max. 15.
